Frequently asked questions about French energy assessments

What a DPE is, when an audit is needed, how a visit works and what we can do for owners based abroad.

Frequently asked questions

What is a French DPE?

The diagnostic de performance énergétique is France's official energy performance certificate, grading a property from A to G for energy use and for greenhouse-gas emissions.

Do I need an energy audit to sell a property in France?

A DPE is needed for virtually every sale. A regulatory energy audit is additionally required for the lowest-rated dwellings. We confirm what applies to your property before you order anything.

What is the difference between a DPE and an energy audit?

The DPE rates the property; the audit analyses it in depth and sets out costed, prioritised renovation scenarios.

Can Neo Étude assist English-speaking property owners?

Yes. We work with owners, buyers and estate agents dealing with international clients, and we report in English.

Which areas of Western France do you cover?

Normandy, Brittany, Pays de la Loire, Centre-Val de Loire and New Aquitaine.

How does an on-site assessment work?

We survey the building, access the loft and technical rooms, take photographs, review energy bills and discuss how the property is used. Access to all rooms and equipment is needed.

I do not live in France. Can the visit still take place?

Yes, provided someone can give access — a neighbour, agent or gardien. The first discussion and the report walkthrough take place by video call.

How much does an energy audit cost?

It depends on floor area, building complexity, the number of systems and the location. Quotes are free and issued after a short conversation.
